Auto insurance companies follow a variation on that model, but one that that allows them to make a profit. With modern insurance, policyholders purchase coverage from an insurance company. Like in a mutual aid society, everyone pays a little bit, so the insurance company has money on hand to pay for damages. However, because it’s unlikely that everyone who has a policy with an insurance company will make a claim for damages, the insurance company gets to keep the extra money as profit. In publicly traded, or stock, companies, the owners are the company’s stockholders. In other insurance companies, known as mutual companies, the owners are the policyholders, who get their share of the profits as dividends and potentially lower rates.
We’ve developed four lists comprised of the cheapest cars or trucks to insure, to fit the needs of car shoppers in the market for a crossover or SUV, a minivan or sedan, a hybrid or all-electric vehicle, a vehicle for you or a teen. The lists were created based on Mercury’s price for full coverage - liability, comprehensive and collision. How it works: Compare’s shopping process asked me to enter the same general information that other auto comparison websites did. Entering the information was fairly straightforward. Most of the fields were drop-down menus or pre-filled based on information I had submitted on previous pages. The questions were detailed, including some about my current policy limits that required retrieving my insurance documents to answer. An Insure.com survey of 3,700 customers yielded the following results, with all scores out of 100.You'll see that though Geico is the cheapest car insurance company among those surveyed in Insurance.com's rate analysis, Allstate scored No. 1 in value for the price, customer service and claims handling. Allstate and Progressive have higher overall scores than Geico. Although by a narrow margin, Geico placed last on customer service, and was beat by Allstate, Nationwide and Farmers on claims handling. 
Common car insurance coverages to consider include liability, which most states require you to have, and collision coverage. Liability will help pay for another person’s injuries as well as the damages to their car if you’re found at fault. Liability coverage does not pay for the repairs to your vehicle, that’s where collision coverage comes into play. Collision coverage is typically an option, unless your lender requires you to carry this coverage. It will cover the costs to repair your vehicle after a car-collision.

A higher deductible means lower premiums, your monthly or annual price. But if you get in an accident, you will have to pay more than if your deductibles were lower. For example, if you have a $500 deductible on a $2,000 accident, you’d pay $500 before your insurance company covers the other $1,500. With a $1,000 deductible, you’re paying $1,000 and your insurer covers the remaining $1,000.

This is pretty ridiculous considering the fact that: 1st, I had regularly asked my former insurance company for reviews and discounts; 2nd, I recently got a speeding ticket in a school zone (which I am a bit ashamed to say) just before I switched; and 3rd, that $1,100 savings was before I got an additional discount for bundling my home insurance on my policy (which is a lot lower now too).
