Coconut oil vs. antibacterial mouthwash ... who is ahead in the fight against bacteria?

Antibacterial mouthwash could be bad for your health

A 2019 study explained how new scientific knowledge is leading the dental industry away from mouthwash use. The study highlighted recent advances in understanding the oral microbiome. A microscopic community of organisms lives in your mouth. Broad spectrum treatments like mouthwashes can upset the balance in this community.

Mouthwashes do not differentiate between types of bacteria, and simply erase them all. What remains is a “blank canvas” that opportunistic pathogens can take over. The remaining beneficial bacteria are then able to colonize the mouth and thus better protect against future infections.

The study was conducted to determine the antibacterial effectiveness of coconut oil and to compare it to chlorhexidine, a common ingredient in antibacterial mouthwashes.

A total of 50 children, ages 8 to 12, were asked to rinse their mouths with either coconut oil or chlorhexidine each morning after brushing their teeth for 2 to 3 minutes. Patients were instructed to continue this routine for 30 days, and the researchers checked the patient's bacterial counts in their plaque and saliva on days 1, 15, and 30.

The results showed an equally significant decrease in the plaque-causing bacterial strain Streptococcus mutans from coconut oil as in the participants who used chlorhexidine, proving that coconut oil is as effective as antibacterial mouthwash at reducing harmful bacteria.

Another study of 60 adults showed that oil pulling with coconut oil for 10 minutes each day increased the number of Streptococcus mutans Bacteria in saliva, compared to distilled water, were already significantly reduced after two weeks.

  2. Put about a tablespoon of oil in your mouth.
  3. Swirl the oil in your mouth for about 15 to 20 minutes. Try pushing and pulling the oil through your teeth to fill in the gaps a toothbrush or floss can't reach.
  4. Then spit out the oil (if possible in the rubbish bag and not in the washbasin), brush your teeth and use dental floss.
