How much does sigmoidoscopy cost

Sigmoidoscopy -endoscopic examination of the rectum

With a sigmoidoscopy (endoscopic examination of the rectum and the adjacent ileum) it is possible to view the inside of the last 40-50 cm of the large intestine and also to take tissue samples from certain areas of the mucous membrane. This examination is carried out with a felixblen endoscope, through whose optics the doctor can see into the intestines. Such an instrument is called a sigmoidoscope and measures about 120 cm compared to the colonoscope, which is about 140-160 cm in length. It can be used to treat hemorrhoids and other diseases in the anus area.

Anatomy and function of the lower digestive tract:

The last piece of the large intestine is called the rectum. The stool is stored in the rectum before defecation. The sphincter muscle of the anus closes the rectum from the outside. The vascular cushions, in the area of which hemorrhoids can form, ensure a complete closure.

What are the reasons for a sigmoidoscopy?

The most important reasons for a sigmoidoscopy are blood discharges from the anus, which presumably originate from the lower colon, and monitoring programs after operations and short-term monitoring after endoscopic polyp removal in this section of the intestine

Many diseases and disorders of the rectum, such as inflammation, blood loss, loss of mucous secretions, hemorrhoids and changes in bowel habits can only be correctly diagnosed and treated if the doctor can get an idea of the condition of the mucous membrane of the rectum. Hemorrhoids, nodular widenings of the veins in the anus area, often occur. Further diseases in the area of the anus are fistulas (pathological duct systems), fissures (small tears) and eczema, which can sometimes be very itchy. These diseases are also recognized and treated during proctoscopy.

Two enemas (e.g. Clysmol®) about 1/2 hour before the examination. Written consent - after appropriate clarification - must be available for the investigation. If you have a

The exam does not cause pain. Preparation is necessary for the examination. A small enema is done before the examination. They lie comfortably on the left. The proctoscope is carefully advanced through the anus. A lubricant makes it easier to insert and reduces the burning sensation. There are no known complications from this examination. Proper preparation is important: if the intestine is not empty, the doctor cannot fully assess the mucous membrane. Therefore, please follow the preparation rules exactly as discussed with you by your doctor. There are two options for treating hemorrhoids, and the doctor will choose the most favorable one for you.

With rubber ligation, a small piece of rubber is pushed over the base of the hemorrhoid. The blood supply is cut off and the hemorrhoid dies. Very rarely, bleeding, pain, or inflammation occurs after removal

A biopsy can be used to take tissue for a histological examination. If you suffer from bleeding tendencies, are taking rheumatism or anticoagulant medication, please tell the doctor! Complications can only arise if you are taking anticoagulant medication.

Mucosal growths, so-called polyps, can be removed through the rectoscope. Very rarely, after removal of large polyps, rebleeding occurs. However, this can be breastfed with the colonoscope. In extremely rare cases, the intestinal wall may perforate, which then has to be treated surgically.
After an investigation
After the examination, you can eat whatever you want. Exercise or a hot water bottle on the stomach can help with flatulence. If you've been given a tranquilizer, drive off
this day no longer with the car. Activities that require you to be very concentrated (e.g. operating machines) are no longer allowed to be carried out on this day. After a polyp removal, please pay attention to pain or bleeding and inform your doctor if necessary. After a complicated procedure, your doctor will explain exactly what you need to pay attention to for the first time after the examination.
