Red Mosque in Islamabad: eyewitness speaks of "indiscriminate killing"

Islamabad (RPO). Heavy fighting between the Pakistani army and radical Islamists turned the Red Mosque, located in a quiet area of ‚Äč‚ÄčIslamabad, into a battlefield on Tuesday. "There are corpses everywhere," reports an eyewitness over the phone from inside the building.

At least 58 people have been killed since security forces began to storm the mosque occupied by militant Islamists at 5 a.m. (2 a.m. CEST), according to army reports.

In the morning, thick smoke rises over the building complex. Strong explosions also shake the nearby embassy district. According to eyewitness reports, the Koran school for girls is on fire on the mosque site. Dozens of ambulances commute between the hospital and the mosque to remove the injured.

The eyewitness inside the mosque speaks of "indiscriminate killing". He uses the phone of the leader of the radical Islamists, Abdul Rashid Ghazi, to speak to the AFP news agency.
