Let's face it: the planet's atmospheres and climates have been changing for decades, and hydrocarbons are a major contributor. This is a class of compounds made up primarily of carbon and hydrogen. As the main components of oil, natural gas and pesticides, these substances contribute to the greenhouse effect and climate change, break down ozone, reduce the photosynthetic ability of plants and increase the incidence of cancer and respiratory diseases in humans. Methane and chlorofluorocarbons

Methane and chlorofluorocarbons are two hydrocarbons that can drastically change the atmosphere. Methane oxidizes to carbon dioxide (CO2), increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and contributing to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

CFCs are used in cold and aerosol cans. When released into the atmosphere, they produce chlorine and reduce the ozone layer, which protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation. For this reason, humans, animals and plants are exposed to more harmful UV rays.

Aldehydes and alkyl nitrates

Aldehydes are toxic chemicals that are produced when hydrocarbons are burned, such as when burning car fuel and plywood. They have been shown to inhibit photosynthesis in plants, cause eye and lung irritation, and possibly even cause cancer.

Alkyl nitrates are products of hydrocarbons that chemically react with molecules in the atmosphere. They can react chemically again to form laughing gas, which can attack the blood vessels, the liver, the kidneys and the nervous system.

Aromatic hydrocarbons and polynuclear aromatic compounds

Aromatic hydrocarbons are formed when coal, oil, tar and plant matter are burned. Benzene is a common hydrocarbon used as a solvent and in fuel. It has been found to break down red blood cells, cause cancer in mammals, and damage the bone marrow.

Polynuclear aromatic compounds are hydrocarbons with two or more benzene molecules. They have also been shown to cause cancer.

Oil: Extensive hydrocarbon damage

Massive oil spills are an obvious cause of damage to human health and ecosystems. Exposure to large amounts of oil can impair respiratory function in animals and humans. Animals that ingest the oil can also be poisoned.

Oil is not only harmful in large spills. Low emissions from automotive spills and other sources can have cumulative effects that can be devastating to the environment.
