Western heroes

John Wayne
actually Marion Michael Morrison, (born May 26, 1907 in Winterset, Iowa, † June 11, 1979 in Los Angeles)

In 1913 the family moved to California. Young Morrison goes to Glendale High School and later to the University of Southern California (graduated in 1928). He received his first film role from John Ford in 1928 in the silent film Mother Machree. In 1930 Raoul Walsh gave him the first lead role in The Big Trail. He made his breakthrough in 1939 with the western "Hell trip to Santa Fé" Stagecoach (director: John Ford). Wayne mostly played the macho guy who suppressed emotions. Wayne's ability to let the inner workings shine through is often underestimated. Its main directors were John Ford and Howard Hawks.

In total, Wayne played the male lead in 142 films, a figure never reached again. Still, he won the Oscar for best male leading actor only once for "The Marshall" (True Grit, 1969).

He played his last film role in "The Last Sniper" (The Shootist) by Don Siegel.

John Wayne died of cancer of the lungs and stomach. He is buried in the Pacific View Memorial Park Cemetery in Corona del Mar, California.
