Mode of Transport

Most goods must be packaged in one way or another before shipping. This is often done by placing them on pallets, and small goods can also be packed in containers. There are countless modes of transport, here are just a few.

Overview of means of transport in the warehouse

The most important, and also known to everyone, is the range, and there is also:
  • Steel container: steel boxes in pallet size in different heights
  • Mesh boxes: similar to steel containers with the same basic dimensions, the side walls, however, with an open mesh structure
  • Roll container: Roll boards with two unstable side supports are also known from supermarkets.
The means of transport are often neglected in operational logistics, but it is never considered that the lack of means of transport can paralyze the entire production process. The system of maximum, minimum and iron stock also applies to the means of transport, whereby the latter should never be attacked as a rule. If the iron stock has to be used anyway, there is a serious error in the warehouse management.

Many of the means of transport belong to a pool, the best known are probably the euro pallets. In order for this pool to work, the euro pallets must always be exchanged by the customer when goods are delivered. Care must be taken to ensure that the pallets can still be used; damaged pallets do not have to be accepted for exchange.

The palette

However, since the regular exchange of pallets is only wishful thinking for many customers, it is part of the management of the means of transport that a pallet account is kept for each customer, by means of which one can see the pallet balance of each individual customer.

If a customer does not return exchangeable pallets that have been outstanding for a long time, the sender is entitled to invoice them with an appropriate amount.

The situation is different with the so-called one-way pallets, which, as the name suggests, are not intended for multiple use. If a customer specifies in his regulations that the goods are to be delivered on one-way pallets, this means of transport will be invoiced directly with the goods.

It is therefore essential that the delivery documents for the goods also indicate which means of transport has been used, and in the case of one-way means of transport these will be billed later, unless the price agreement including the means of transport has been made. In the case of reusable means of transport, the procedure, i.e. exchange or non-exchange, must be noted on a means of transport ticket (pallet slip, container certificate, etc.) and the customer's means of transport account booked accordingly.

The booking of the means of transport should also flow into the operational accounting at the same time, so that they can be assigned to the cost accounts when purchasing and to the revenue accounts when selling to the customer.

Process of a continuous inventory for means of transport in the warehouse

In order to ensure smooth operations, a continuous inventory is also recommended for storage of means of transport. The process organization is as follows:
  • Purchase of the means of transport, storage and booking; on the one hand to the means of transport account of warehouse management, on the other hand to the cost account of operational accounting.
  • Removal of the means of transport for the packing station, including booking out of the inventory of the warehouse management and a note of the means of transport on the goods.
  • When the goods are dispatched, the dispatch accounting department One-way means of transport are released for calculation in the operations accounting, but reusable pallets are documented.
  • After returning the means of transport accompanying document this is booked accordingly; once on the customer's means of transport account and, in the event of an exchange, as access to the means of transport warehouse.
